Why You Are Important

Research shows that when young people develop positive relationships, experiences, and inner strengths – known as developmental assets – these assets can give them the strength and wisdom to make smart decisions throughout their lives. Adult involvement with young people can help youth cope and adapt when difficult things happen, helping them avoid high-risk behaviors, such as alcohol and other drug use, violence, and premature sexual activity. It also assists in developing the attitudes, skills, and abilities they need in order to be good people and meaningful contributors to society.

A recent survey of adults found:
  • 97% say it’s important to engage with youth in some way
However:
  • 53% said they had no time
  • 46% said they had never been asked
  • 31% said they had no skills to offer

But the reality is, many of the ways you can connect with a young person involve nothing more than five minutes of your time and, in most cases, anybody can do them.
